Two of the accused have been identified as Santosh (23) and Ved Rampal (32), who reside in outer Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy area, not very far away from Vijay Vihar. ‘It has been known that Santosh was the one who shot constable Jagveer with a country-made pistol and Rampal was the one driving the auto-rickshaw which was intercepted by the two cops,’ said RS Krishnia, Joint Commissioner of Police (northern range).
He further added that Santosh is a history-sheeter with several cases of attempt to murder, burglary and illegal possession of arms registered against him. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and revealed the identities of three of his other gang members. A few of them were released from jail earlier this year only.
Rampal had lately joined them. He rented the auto-rickshaw and used it in executing burglaries with Santosh’s gang, Krishnia added. The police are still looking for the other three accused. They are burglars and frequented Vijay Vihar area and other nearby localities late at night searching for potential targets. When they were stopped by the two constables on 13 October, they pretended to be glass cutters working in a nearby shop, said a senior police official.
After the arrest of the two of them, the service revolver which they stole after killing the constable was recovered from their possession, however, the cartridges were missing. Two country made pistols and the auto-rickshaw used in the crime were also recovered, said Vikramjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).
Both were rushed to a hospital where Jagveer was declared brought dead and Narender’s condition was said to be stable after a surgery.
