In a suspected revenge attack, a 19-year-old girl was stabbed to death by a youth at a crowded lane in Central Delhi’s Anand Parbat area on Thursday evening. The girl’s mother also sustained stab injuries during her failed attempt to rescue her daughter. The deceased, identified as Meenakshi, was a Class XI student. Residents had already rushed the mother and daughter to RML hospital by the time a police team reached the spot. Meenakshi later succumbed to multiple stab injuries, said a police official.
Expressing shock over the incident, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took a jibe at Delhi Police and PM Narendra Modi over law and order situation in the city. “This is shocking. Delhi police directly under PM. PM shud spare a few hrs every week to assess capital’s law and order position,” he tweeted.
“The accused, identified as Jai Prakash (21), has been arrested. The families of the victim and the accused are neighbours with a strained relationship. However, what exactly had triggered the act could not be ascertained yet,” said Parmaditya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central).
He further said that her family had filed a complaint against Jai Prakash in 2013 alleging that he used to stalk Meenakshi. However, no FIR was registered in this connection. According to police, Meenakshi had gone to a nearby grocery store to run errands around 7.30 pm on Thursday. When she was about to return, Jai Prakash allegedly waylaid her and started verbally abusing her in connection with some incident in the past. When she resisted, he whipped out a knife from his pocket and attacked her on the face.
Meenakshi tried to run away but Jai Prakash chased her and allegedly stabbed her multiple times. Her mother, Usha, rushed to her rescue and in turn got stabbed too. Jai Prakash fled the scene by the time people gathered at the spot.
A call was made to the PCR around 7.45 pm. Jai Prakash was finally tracked down at the Ramjas
School playground at Anand Parbat. He has been booked under Sections 302 (murder) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by using dangerous weapons) of IPC, said Parmaditya.
