172 vehicles impounded for carrying goods without bills

The Delhi government’s Department of Trade and Taxes seized 172 goods vehicles, entering the city without formal documents in a special drive in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.  

“The drive was conducted to check goods vehicles, coming into the city without the required documents. Goods brought by such vehicles are sold unaccounted and thus evading huge amount of Value Added Tax (VAT),” said SS Yadav, Commissioner of VAT. He added that 40 teams were constituted which were led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDMs) and VAT officers. 

“The drive was conducted from 11 pm on Saturday and continued till 6 am on Sunday. The teams checked 1650 vehicles and impounded 172 goods vehicles,” he added. Yadav further informed that out of 172 vehicles 106 vehicles were found carrying goods without any bill and 66 vehicles carried goods without the mandatory DS2 form,” he informed. 

The items seized from the vehicles included country liquor, Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), granite, marble, tiles, sanitary items,  steel, cement, readymade garments, furniture,  paper rolls, lights, auto parts, coolers, plywood, electric fans, mattresses, refrigerators,  machines, spices,  sports goods, etc.

He added the total value of goods contained in the vehicles was being ascertained, but it would be amounting to crores of rupees. The vehicles detained include containers, very heavy vehicles, heavy vehicles and medium goods vehicles. A detailed investigation of goods contained in each of the detained vehicles will be prepared and VAT assessment will be made. “The defaulters will be charged with VAT and penalty,” he added. 

As per the rule, the owners of the vehicles will have to pay a penalty of 20 per cent of the value of goods being carried in the vehicle without the bill.
