The government officials prosecuted 165 shopkeepers for selling illicit goods. As per Packaged Commodity Rules, 2011, the traders and manufacturers of any packaged goods are bound to specify all the relevant details about their product.
‘If they don’t, the first time violators are fined Rs 25,000, the second time violators are fined Rs 50,000. And on commission of the third time, one can be fined anything between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1,00,000 and jailed for a period of up to one year,’ an IAS officer said.
The officials have also prosecuted about 300 shopkeepers for selling electrical goods, particularly Chinese made, in violation of the rules. The shopkeepers were prosecuted for not specifying electric decoration lights details. It was found most of the shopkeepers were selling Chinese electrical goods freely without any specification.
In the meantime, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has asked the police to make sure no one sells Chinese crackers in Delhi. The intelligence unit officials have also seized about 100 cartons of Chinese crackers from Janakpuri area in west Delhi.
The city is still witnessing huge sale of Chinese goods, including crackers, for the past few years. But this year, the administration has banned the sale of Chinese crackers as they are brought clandestinely in violation of all rules and regulations.
