At least 16 people were injured when a refrigerator compressor at a bakery in the Chandni Mahal area of north Delhi exploded on Monday afternoon. Delhi police has registered a case of negligible conduct against the bakery. Investigations are on to establish culpability in the incident.
The incident took place at approximately 3 pm. The owner of the bakery, Irshad, lives with his family on the floor above the bakery, which is located in the ground floor of a three-storey building in the area. 'At approximately 3 pm, neighbours heard a loud thud and rushed to see what had caused the sound. The impact of the blast was such that neighbouring houses were virtually shaken', said the witnesses.
Police said first the compressor of the freezer exploded and went up in flames. The fire engulfed a gas cylinder kept nearby. Within seconds the fire had engulfed the entire bakery. The owner and employees of the bakery, as well, as customers present at the shop and others who had rushed in hearing the explosion, were caught in the fire.
Neighbours informed the police and fire officials who rushed to the spot. Ten fire tenders reached the spot and doused the flames which had already subsided due to the efforts being made by the neighbours. According to fire department officials, a call was received at approximately 1.45 pm, reporting a fire in a bakery. Fire tenders were immediately sent to the spot.
The injured were rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash hospital where they are being treated. The condition of two of the injured is reportedly critical, while the others are out of danger, hospital sources said.
Mohammed Fahim and Ramdin have sustained 40 per cent burns, police said, while the others have sustained around 10 per cent burns.
North Delhi mayor, Azad Singh visited the injured at the hospital. The Mayor also requested the deputy commissioner of City Zone to have the debris cleared at the earliest so that the residents don’t suffer any inconvenience.
