Two of the four death row convicts in the 16 December gangrape case on Wednedsay contended before the Delhi High Court that police had arrested them without following proper procedure.
Appearing for convicts Mukesh and Pawan Kumar Gupta before the bench of justices Reva Khetrapal and Pratibha Rani, advocate M L Sharma alleged that without any evidence in hand Delhi police had arrested them on the basis of media report.
The lawyer also claimed convict Mukesh, brother of main accused Ram Singh, was arrested from a village in Rajasthan a day after the incident had taken place in Delhi on 16 December, 2013 but police had shown his arrest on 18 December. Further, the counsel alleged his clients were tortured by the police and they were not provided with free legal aid.
Referring to some the Supreme Court judgements, the lawyer argued before the bench that even the magistrate, before whom the accused were produced soon after their arrest, had failed to look into the issue of providing free legal aid to the accused.
Artistes kick-off tribute campaign for Delhi gangrape victim
New Delhi: Several songs of protest, a monodrama and a full-length play depicting violence against women kickstarted a week-long event to mark the anniversary of the gruesome Delhi gangrape. Mumbai theatre group Swaang teamed up with city-based band Majma to launch ‘Jurrat: Aazaad Chalo, Bebaak Chalo!’ campaign in memory of the 23-year-old paramedic, who was gangraped by six people inside a moving bus on 16 December, last year. The incident had set off a nationwide outrage. ‘We had been planning the campaign from quite some time. We wanted to raise the issue of gender-violence but in our way, that is the cultural way,’ actress Swara Bhaskar, one of the founding members of Swaang said.
