This will save commuters time and money.
‘The expansion of the Delhi Metro network by the end of Phase-III in the form of Line-7 (Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar) and Line-8 (Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden) will bring many metro stations closer to each other in contrast to the current scenario,’ the Delhi Metro said in a statement.
Metro officials said that the crisscrossing of Phase-III lines, with the existing lines at many places, will lead to emergence of several interchange stations, thus, shortening the distance between two different parts of the city by up to 15 km at some locations.
Presently, there are nine interchange stations, namely, Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Central Secretariat, Inderlok, Ashok Park Main, Yamuna Bank, Dwarka Sec 21, New Delhi and Kirti Nagar.
The Delhi Metro said once Phase-III becomes fully operational by 2016, its network will have 13 more interchange hubs across the city. This includes Hauz Khas, INA, Rajouri Garden, Mayur Vihar phase-I, Azadpur, Netaji Subhash Place, Lajpat Nagar, Anand Vihar, Karkardooma, Welcome, Kalkaji Mandir, Botanical Garden and Mandi House. ‘With the arrival of interchange stations at Karkarduma and Anand Vihar in Phase-III, the current distance between these stations from the nearest station, Welcome, will come down drastically to 4.34 km and 5.49 km from the 19.26 km and 20.32 km respectively, if commuters travel by metro,’ the DMRC said. Similarly, with the arrival of other interchange stations on Phase-3, commuters in almost all parts of Delhi will be able to change trains without ever going to the other such stations like Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat.
Hauz Khas Metro station will come up as an interchange between Line -2 (Noida to Dwarka) and the Line 8 (Janakpuri West -Botanical Garden Corridor) of Phase-III. Passengers coming from the Gurgaon on Line-2 will be able to get down at Hauz Khas and take a direct train to Kalkaji. In doing so they would save travel distance by approximately 13 kms. Earlier, for the same route the interchange facility was available only at Central Secretariat station and distance travelled was about 18.6 kms. However, with Line 8 connectivity, the distance between Hauz Khas and Kalkaji would just be 5.45 kms.
‘The new interchange stations will also aid in the decongestion of those interchange stations currently in operation,’ the Delhi Metro added.
