11 revenue districts in the city now

On Monday, the Delhi cabinet has decided in-principle to create 11 revenue districts. For now there are nine revenue districts.

In order to bring justice at the doorstep of common man and also to ensure the effective administration, government decided to amend the boundaries of nine districts and develop them into 11 districts.

Sources said, from north-east district and north-west district for Rohini to be formed by the government as these two are highly populated districts and the administration were having difficulties to manage it.

‘We have taken an in-principle decision to increase the number of districts to 11. The details are being worked out,’ said chief minister Sheila Dikshit after the cabinet meeting.

At present, there are nine districts along with 27 sub-divisions, which came into existence from 1 January 1997.

Division commissioner remains the only district magistrate for the entire Delhi as far as the discharge of magisterial work is concerned.

However, the function of district magistrates were not decentralised or devolved to the newly created deputy commissioner’s offices in 1997. The law department under the Delhi government took up the matter with the Government of India for enabling the division of hitherto single metropolitan area as may be deemed appropriate by the state government for public convenience as population of Delhi has increased over a period of years.
