An 11-month-old girl child was killed by a stray dog, late on Tuesday night in New Ashok Nagar area. The dog dragged the child for a few metres, before biting and tearing her to death.
A police official said the victim, Dhanlakshmi, was playing in the Kondli area when the dog attacked her. According to Chitra Gupta, mother of the victim, her neighbour Ravi Solanki had taken her daughter outside to play. Another neighbour, identified as Rajat, was walking with a stray dog. Suddenly, to threaten Ravi, he Rajat provoked the dog to attack him. The dog, however, attacked the girl.
According to the eye-witnesses, the dog caught hold of the girl’s throat and dragged her to a distance. The child suffered critical injuries. Several neighbours then gathered, beat up the dog and rushed Dhanlakshmi to a nearby hospital.
When she reached the hospital, she was unconscious and had lost a lot of blood. The doctors kept her on a ventilator but she died after a few minutes.
Lamenting Rajat’s apathy, Chitra said, ‘He didn’t even bother to come and find out what happened to my daughter. Even though he himself was responsible for her death. Rajat is always surrounded by stray dogs. He feeds them and plays with them. That is why these dogs follow his instructions.’
A case has been registered in New Ashok Nagar police station under appropriate sections. So far, Rajat has not been arrested. ‘The body has been sent for post-mortem and the reports are awaited,’ said an official.
