11 killed, 6 injured in grenade attack in Egypt’s North Sinai

At least 11 persons of a family, including women and children, were killed and six others injured when a rocket-propelled grenade struck two houses in Egypt’s restive North Sinai, security officials said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday after a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) hit two houses in Sheikh Zweid city. Six others were injured in the attack. The source of the missile was not identified.

The security officials added that all the dead are from one family. Egypt’s Sinai has witnessed many violent attacks by militants since the January 2011 revolution that toppled the ex-president Hosni Mubarak.

The attacks targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Over 500 security personnel have been reported killed since then. The military has launched security campaigns in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses that belong to terrorists,
including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip.
