1 held for trying to mow senior cop

After 24 hours of investigation, Delhi police has finally nabbed a driver, who allegedly tried to mow down Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner (traffic), with a truck on  late Tuesday night. He has been identified as Asab Khan. A case of attempt to murder was registered against the driver. The incident took place when Garg was on a drive along with deputy commissioner of police (south), Prem Nath.

Garg, Nath and Head Constable Ravinder had stopped a truck at the DND Expressway around 9 pm last night.

‘Me and Prem Nath were standing in front of the truck and trying to question the driver. He suddenly started the vehicle and tried to mow us down,’ Garg said while addressing the media persons. ‘I am happy to be alive,’ he added. ‘We thought the truck would slow down, but instead the driver speeded up and that is when DCP Prem Nath pulled me away from the truck’s path. Head Constable Ravinder fell down. He rolled between the truck’s wheels to save himself,’ Garg told a press conference.

‘We later chased the truck but till then, the driver and the helper had fled,’ added Garg.

A senior police official investigating the matter said, ‘We have booked a case against the duo under sections 307(attempt to murder), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions) and 34 (acts done by several persons in futherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code. We have detained the owner of the truck, who hails from Mewat,’ the official added.

During questioning, the owner told the officials that both the accused also hailed from Mewat. ‘It is not yet confirmed whether the truck was loaded with illegal mining sand or not. It will be too early to conclude anything about the sand that was being transported. It will be confirmed once both of them have been nabbed,’ the official said.
