In the wake of the BJP announcing it will gherao the borough offices of Kolkata Municipal Corporation in north Kolkata on Monday while accusing Mayor Firhad Hakim of failing to tackle the dengue situation, the latter said the saffron brigade should quit its theatrics and learn to work for the people on the ground.
BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar was seen spreading bleach in the Maniktala area. He told the media that since the KMC allegedly is not doing its work, his party has taken it upon itself to do the needful. He said BJP workers will gherao the borough offices in north Kolkata in a protest against the KMC’s alleged failure to control the dengue situation and illegal constructions in the city. He also alleged that the state government is suppressing data on deaths due to dengue. Majumdar alleged that the Mayor is not bothered about the worrying situation and is instead busy planning how and where to park corruption money.
Reacting to the same, Hakim told the media that it is high time BJP must put an end to its theatrics and learn to work for the people on the ground. “Will they be able to prove their allegations against me? They have central agencies such as the ED and the CBI. Let them prove these charges against me. This is all drama since the BJP has lost ground as the results of the elections have proved that the support of the people is not with them” he remarked. Referring to Sukanta, he said: “Does he have the guts to defeat Firhad Hakim from any constituency in Kolkata? Let him choose any seat.”
Hakim added: “Dengue has happened in the past and will happen again in the future. We live in such a climate that it is favourable for such vector-borne diseases. KMC is doing everything it can to control the situation.”
According to sources, in the last seven days at least 40 more cases of dengue have taken place in the city. According to KMC, roughly 200
cases have been tracked in the city from January to July.
