Kolkata: A former hockey player and railway employee who was assaulted in a road rage incident around 24 days ago died on Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as Eric Lakra (around 50), was involved in an altercation with a group of youths near the Station Chak area after a minor collision between his car and a motorcycle on March 8. It is alleged that while Lakra was on his way home, three youths on a motorcycle chased him and attacked him with an iron rod near the Officers’ Club House on Ashok Avenue.
He was first taken to a local hospital and later shifted to a hospital in Durgapur, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. Lakra’s wife had earlier lodged a complaint at the Chittaranjan police station.
While a case of attempt to murder was initially registered, police are now adding a murder charge following his death. Police are examining CCTV footage and no arrests have been made so far.
