Kolkata: Kanai Chandra Mondal, once regarded as a formidable CPI(M) leader in Nabagram, has seen a dramatic shift in his political career by joining the BJP after being denied a ticket by the Trinamool Congress for the 2026 Assembly elections.
Mondal built his early political identity within the CPI(M), where he served for years as the local committee secretary and emerged as a dominant organisational figure in the Nabagram area. His grassroots influence translated into electoral success in 2016, when he won the Assembly election and became an MLA under the Left Front banner.
However, in a significant political move, Mondal later switched sides and joined the Trinamool Congress. His entry into the ruling camp was facilitated by Suvendu Adhikari, who was then a senior TMC leader and minister. Continuing his political momentum, Mondal contested the 2021 Assembly elections on a Trinamool Congress ticket and secured victory once again, reinforcing his relevance in the region’s political landscape.
However, the Trinamool Congress has decided not to nominate Mondal as a candidate this time. Following the announcement, the leader expressed dissatisfaction over the decision and subsequently switched allegiance to the BJP. The saffron party welcomed the MLA in the presence of senior leader Suvendu Adhikary and Shamik Bhattacharya, viewing the induction as part of its ongoing efforts to expand its presence in key constituencies.
