Suvendu Adhikari, the state transport minister, who is leaving no stone unturned to fulfill the dream of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by ensuring a better transport system with least number of accidents in the state, on Tuesday reached an accident spot at Tamluk in East Midnapore as a saviour of two persons lying unattended in a pool of blood.
On Tuesday afternoon, Adhikari came to know of an accident on Haldia-Mecheda crossing when he was returning after attending a programme. He rushed to the spot. As the police was late in reaching the accident site, a couple with severe injuries all over their bodies was lying unattended. He urged the people not to create panic and asked his security guards to take them to hospital in his pilot car.
The policemen immediately took both of them in their car and rushed to the hospital. The transport minister had given a clear direction to the policemen to take all necessary steps to ensure that the couple receives all necessary treatment after being admitted to the hospital. He had also directed them to inform their relatives and neighbours about the incident. Steps were also been asked to take so that the victim’s family members and relatives do not get harassed unnecessarily in search of the dear ones in the hospital, sources said.
Later, police came to know that the couple was heading to the national highway on a bicycle when a Maruti car had hit them. They fell on the ground and received severe injuries. Some local people had seen the offending vehicle, but couldn’t take down its registration number.
The residents of the area praised the move of the transport minister. They said that the transport minister had extended his helping hand without caring about his own security. The villagers demanded arrest of the driver of the car and stringent against him so that no more drivers drive vehicles recklessly.
It may be mentioned that the state government has launched the “Safe Drive, Save Life” campaign to reduce the number of road accidents in the state. Thus, the police have been instructed to take necessary steps to check incidents as it happened on Tuesday on Haldia-Mecheda Road.
