Kolkata: A major tragedy was averted at the NRS Medical College and Hospital on Friday after a portion of the ceiling collapsed in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) section. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

According to hospital sources, around 12 critically ill patients who were inside the ICU at the time of the incident narrowly escaped a major tragedy. The incident occurred on the sixth floor of the UNB building in the morning. The staff members of the hospital and the security personnel shifted the patients to another building where a temporary ICU was set up to accommodate these patients.

The CCU section where the incident took place was shut down immediately after the incident.

No patients would be kept in that section where the incident happened. It will resume normal function after the PWD completes the repair works. Hospital sources said some cracks had reportedly been visible for some time and the authorities were already informed about the same through a letter recently.

Hospital staff acted swiftly to evacuate the area and miraculously, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

The incident comes on the heels of the March 20 tragedy at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where 40-year-old Arup Bandopadhyay lost his life after being crushed by a malfunctioning elevator.

The back-to-back incidents at two of the state’s premier medical institutions have sparked tension among the patients.
