Senior Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy has written to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to know the role of the central forces in the elections here in West Bengal. In his letter to the commission, Roy also wanted to know if section 144 of CrPC was enforced throughout North 24-Parganas and Howrah in the phase four elections held on April 25. He also wanted to know if section 144 will be enforced in the next phase of elections scheduled to take place in some parts of Kolkata, Hooghly and South 24-Parganas.
It was learnt from the commission that the CEO office had forwarded a copy of the letter to the Election Commission office in Delhi.
In another development BJP leader Rupa Ganguly who is contesting the elections from the Howrah North also met Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta on Wednesday demanding re-poll in 16 polling booths under her constituency.
She said that she would also write to the Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi placing her demand of re-polling in the 16 booths. CPI(M) leader and former minister from Sudarshan Roy Chowdhury also met Gupta urging him to take adequate security arrangements regarding law and order situation.
Meanwhile, the commission is looking into the incident in which a CPI(M) agent entered into the strong room in Burdwan University without proper permission. Police have arrested the accused.
Police said Abhijit Nandi, the accused, entered into the strong room at UIT Bhavan inside Burdwan University without valid documents. Police have been interrogating the accused to know why he entered into the strong room without permission.
