Youth attempts suicide at Metro station, train services disrupted

Kolkata: Metro services were disrupted for nearly an hour on Friday morning after a youth attempted suicide at Rabindra Sarovar Metro Station.

The incident took place at around 10.30 am when victim jumped off before a Kavi Subhash-bound train.

The train was entering the station when the victim jumped on the tracks. The driver of the AC rake applied emergency brake and stopped the train. The power connection to the railway track was immediately disconnected by the metro railway authorities.

Police said the victim's identity is yet to be ascertained.

The incident triggered panic among passengers who were standing at the platform to catch a metro. The RPF and metro personnel rushed to the spot to rescue the victim from the railway track. It was learnt that he received serious injuries in the incident.

He was immediately rushed to MR Bangur Hospital in Tollygunge.

According to police, the victim had sustained some injuries in his body.

The metro services were affected with the metro railway officials running truncating services between Noapara and Maidan in the Up line and between Kavi Subhash and Tollygunge in the Down.

Normal services resumed nearly after one hour. The commuters faced serious inconvenience as the incident took place at the rush hour. Many of the passengers took buses to reach their offices.

The trains were overcrowded when normal services resumed. The situation became normal within 15 minutes. According to a senior metro official, the victim was saved due to the alertness of the driver of the train. The metro staff members and the security personnel acted on a war footing and brought him out from beneath the train. Police are investigating to ascertain the identity of the victim and the reason behind his suicide attempt. According to hospital sources, the patient's condition is serious.
