A youth has been accused of stabbing a schoolgirl with whom he had a relationship. The incident took place at Borosako area of Malda. On Tuesday night, the accused youth stormed into the house of the victim and stabbed her with a sharp weapon. The locals, however, managed to catch hold of him when he tried to flee the area after committing the crime. The locals also beat him up before handing him over to the police. The incident triggered tension in the area on Tuesday night.
The victim girl belonged to a poor family and appeared in the Madhyamik examination this year. Accused Prasenjit Mondal (25) had developed a relationship with the victim for the past few months and were seen together at various places.
The local residents said they saw Prasenjit entering the house of the victim with a bag in his hand on Tuesday night. The accused was carrying a weapon in the bag. Some of the local residents went to the house of the victim and found her lying in a pool of blood and the accused attempted to flee the spot.
The local people rushed the victim girl to Malda Medical College and Hospital with serious injuries on her body. Her condition is stated to be critical. The police are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the murder attempt. Police suspect that the accused might have attacked the girl after he came to know that the victim's family members were trying to get her married off elsewhere.
