According to sources, Jammu Tawi Express reached Kolkata Station on Thursday night. Railway staff found the body while cleaning after passengers had alighted the train. They spotted a sack under the berth number 71 of S9 compartment.
Suspecting danger the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) were informed. Primarily both RPF and GRP checked the sack cautiously suspecting it to be a bomb. When they were sure that there was no bomb scare, the sack was opened.
They found a luggage bag inside the sack. Police personnel sensed a foul smell was emanating from the bag. When they opened it they found the body of woman with burn injuries on her face. Seniors officers were informed immediately.
Sources said after preliminary investigation it was suspected that the woman aged about 25 years has been strangled. Later her face was burnt to hide her identity. Till Friday night the identity of the deceased was not determined. GRP sleuths are checking the CCTV camera footage of those stations, where train halted before reaching Kolkata Station. They will also question the passengers of the berth where the body was found.
