Kolkata: A woman was stabbed by a miscreant on Friday night inside a ladies coach of the Bandel local train. Sources informed that she was travelling back home to Uttarpara and was alone in the coach.

Passengers from other coaches heard her scream and chased the alleged miscreant near Howrah Station car shed when the train slowed down.

According to police sources, Sonu Sharma, a resident of Uttarpara works as a cook in Alipore. She often returns home late.

On Friday night, she boarded the ladies coach of Up Bandel local from Howrah station around 10:20 pm.

When the train left the platform, all of a sudden, Guddu Singh managed to climb up to the coach as the train slowed down.

Immediately, he allegedly jumped on Sharma and tried to snatch her mobile phone and purse. As she showed resistance, he took out a knife from his pocket and stabbed her multiple times.

Even after being injured, Sharma tried to alert other passengers in the next compartment by screaming and somehow managed to hold on to Singh. When the train approached the car shed, Singh managed to free himself and jumped off.

Meanwhile, hearing the cries, someone from the other coach pulled the chain which led the train to halt.

As the train stopped, some passengers ran towards the ladies coach and a few others chased Singh.

Soon Singh was caught and was beaten up.

Later he was handed over to police and Sharma was moved to a hospital.
