Kolkata: A woman was saved by inches from getting runover by a freight train at New Alipore railway station on Wednesday afternoon.
Three students, who saw the woman, came to her help and took her to a local hospital.
According to sources, on Wednesday, around 12:30 pm, three students of New Alipore college, identified as Soumyajit Guha, Preetin Pramanik and Rakesh Biswas, were waiting for a train at the New Alipore railway station.
Just outside the platform area, a freight train was waiting for signal clearance.
At that moment, the woman wanted to cross the railway track.
While doing so, she tried crossing the railway track by crawling under the freight train.
As soon as she crawled under the train, it started moving. Sensing danger, the woman started screaming.
Hearing her scream, students, who were waiting on the platform ran to the spot. They reportedly suggested the woman to lie down on the track facing the ground.
One of them also checked whether any locomotive is attached to the rear of the train.
After almost three minutes, the train crossed the woman. As soon as the train left, the students went to the woman and offered her water.
Later they took her to a local hospital where doctor examined her and found that there were no injuries on her body. Local residents praised the students who helped the woman by asking her to lie down and taking her to the hospital.
Sources informed that, several people in that area risk their lives while crossing railway tracks. Despite Eastern Railway (ER) authorities urged people not to cross railway tracks, no one bothers to listen. Some even crawls under the static trains like the woman did on Wednesday.
Nikhil Chakraborty, Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) was not aware of the incident. But after he came to know about it said: "We regularly arrange awareness campaigning in various ways and urge people not to cross railway tracks. We are trying our best to ensure safety of people. But people also need to be aware of the consequences of their acts."
