Winter likely to disappear from South Bengal districts

Update: 2019-01-24 18:00 GMT

Kolkata: Mercury has been soaring in all South Bengal districts and is likely to go up over the next few days paving the way for spring.

The Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore on Thursday predicted that temperatures in South Bengal districts will rise bringing the long lasting winter to an end. But Met officials have predicted that sunny days may end on a cold note.

In the next of couple of days, the lowest temperature may hover around 16-17 degree Celsius, while the highest may climb up to 28-29 degree Celsius with no prediction of rainfall in the city.

"The wet-easterly wind has started injecting moisture into the mainland from Bay-of-Bengal and will continue to do so. As a result, mercury will continue to go up till next Sunday.

The north-westerly that brings winter chill has lost its intensity and the cold spell will eventually disappear," a senior Met official said.

The weather office has not, however, officially mentioned if winter is going to completely disappear from the city. As occasional rise and fall in temperatures is common during this period, it would be difficult to announce the withdrawal of the winter season, an official maintained.

It was learnt that people in North Bengal districts may continue to feel the cold wave for a few more days as the temperature in some places may hover around 10 degree Celsius.

However, this situation will not last much longer.

It may be mentioned that few days ago the city's temperature suddenly dropped by a few notches due to the impact of the uninterrupted northwesterly.
