Lal Dighi, the heritage water body situated adjacent to the Writers' Building, is soon going to be one of the favourite destinations for Kolkatans as it would host a weekend cultural fiesta and offer popular Bengali dishes from April 15.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has renovated Lal Dighi and its adjoining areas at an approximate cost of Rs 25 crore. A stall named as 'Dyakho-Rey' by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been inaugurated which will offer various delicacies to the people. This is a gift to the city dwellers on the occasion of Bengali New Year.
It was a dream of the Chief Minister to set up a stall on the bank of Lal Dighi where people would get to taste various Bengali cuisines. After attending an administrative meeting in Murshidabad, Banerjee said that cultural programmes would be organised here at Laldighi on weekends. Mayor Sovan Chatterjee during his visit to Lal Dighi on Thursday said the stall will not only offer traditional Bengali dishes but will also reflect traditional Bengal culture which people from other parts of the country will be able to see once they visit the place. Various cultural programmes will be conducted at Lal Dighi on every Saturday and Sunday respectively. Like Park Street carnival, Lal Dighi will attract visitors on the weekends. It was also learnt that a makeshift stage will be erected to accommodate artists or theatre groups for their weekend performances. The KMC has given a facelift to the water-body to attract tourists. The civic body has installed six coloured fountains which will be operational from the evening.
The trees around Lal Dighi will be decorated with lights to add on to the beauty of the place. "The weekend carnival on the bank of Lal Dighi will be the most crowd-pulling event of the city. It was the dream of the Chief Minister who inspired to undertake the project. We will make sure people who will visit the spot to enjoy their weekends won't be disappointed," the Mayor said.
