Kolkata: Maheshtala police station has arrested a person for allegedly murdering his wife on Thursday. According to the complaint filed by the family members of the deceased, the woman was being tortured regularly for money.

It was also alleged that the accused used to play chess everyday, instead of looking for a job to support his family, which the deceased protested against.

Sources informed that one Suraia was married to Manojit Talukdar of Baruapara in Maheshtala for the last seven years. Due to some reasons, Talukdar lost his job a few months after his marriage.

Since then, regular altercation became a normal thing to their neighbours. Suraia used to allege that Talukdar was not doing anything to support the family. Instead, he used to put pressure on Suraia to bring money from her father and other relatives.

Eight months ago, Suraia gave birth to a boy and the problem escalated since then. Talukdar allegedly demanded money from Suraia for his needs.

When Suraia asked him to do some work to support their family, Talukdar allegedly used to beat her.

Unable to tolerate her husband's torture, Suraia went to her father a few months ago. But after a few days, her family members adviced both Suraia and Talukdar to lead a normal life, and sent her back to Baruapara.

On Thursday, a member of the Talukdar family called Suraia's father and told him that she had tried to commit suicide by hanging and had been admitted in a local nursing home.

When Suraia's family members reached Baruapara, they found her dead. Her family members alleged that Manojit had killed her and later hung the body to make it look like she had committed suicide.

Later, on the basis of the complaint filed against Talukdar, police arrested him on charges of domestic violence and dowry death.
