Kolkata: Balurghat Superspecialty Hospital in South Dinajpur and Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata gave a fresh lease of life to two patients in separate incidents.

Khatuja Banu (15), a resident of Tapan, suffered internal injuries in her abdomen after she fell on a concrete floor adjacent to her house three days ago. The victim later started complaining of pain and was taken to Balurghat Superspecialty Hospital. An USG done on the patient confirmed blood clots inside her abdomen. Doctors conducted a surgery for nearly two-and-a-half-hours and removed the blood clots. The patient's health condition has improved.

A senior official of the hospital said the patient was in a critical condition when she was admitted. Her life was in jeopardy and any delay would have cost her life, he added.

In another incident, Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) successfully removed a toy whistle that got stuck near the lungs of a 5-year-old boy, Sariful Gaji.

A resident of the Kultali area of South 24-Parganas, Gaji was taken to CMCH on Friday after he complained of a respiratory distress.

An X-ray performed on the victim failed to find out the reason. Later, a CT scan confirmed that a whistle was stuck near his lungs.

The doctors said the victim swallowed the toy whistle while playing with it and developed respiratory problems. A team of doctors performed a surgery for nearly 15 minutes and removed the whistle.

A team of doctors was formed to carry out the operation. The patient has been kept under observation and been doing fine. He will be soon released, a senior official of the hospital said.
