Two killed in separate incidents of electrocution

Kolkata: A middle-aged man got electrocuted when he went to the top of a local train at Bidhannagar Road station and touched a high voltage overhead electrical line. The incident took place at around 6.50 pm on Sunday.

The police suspect that the victim was mentally retarded.

According to a spokesperson of the railways, the incident took place soon after a Sealdah-bound Bongaon local entered platform number four of Bidhannagar Road station.

The man, who is yet to be identified, was loitering aimlessly on the platform. All of a sudden he climbed up the train and went on its roof. As it was a Sunday, there were less number of people on the platform and in the train as well. So, initially no one had noticed the person.

It only came to the notice of some hawkers when he started making gestures at them. The hawkers started shouting to alert the loco pilot and other officials. But before anyone could get him down, the person touched the high voltage overhead electric wires and got electrocuted. The power supply in the electric wire was stopped and necessary steps were taken to bring him down. He was declared brought dead when taken to hospital. The movement of trains through platform number four of the station remained suspended from 6.50 pm to 8.22 pm.

In another incident, a technician who was working at Bharat Laxmi studio on Saturday night was killed after being electrocuted.

The victim has been identified as Subrata Boiragi. It was learnt that the victim was doing some electrical work when he stepped on an electrical wire.

The incident triggered tension among other crew members, who were shooting for a serial inside the studio. Some of his colleagues rushed the victim to MR Bangur Hospital in Tollygunge where the doctors pronounced him brought dead.

After being informed police reached the spot and started a probe in this regard. They are yet to ascertain the exact cause of his death. According to the police, the victim was a resident of Regent Colony area in Tollygunge.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that he died after being electrocuted. Police are also interrogating the colleagues of the victim who were present at the spot. They said the deceased touched a live electrical wire while he was making some arrangement of lighting.
