Kolkata: Two persons committed suicide and a mentally challenged young girl tried to immolate herself by pouring kerosene on Saturday.
23-year-old Anisha Khatoon, a resident of Chamru Khan Sama Lane, is an alumni of Sir Iqbal Shishu Shiksha Kendra, Bright Street. She is presently undergoing treatment at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. According to her neighbours, the incident took place at 9 am on Saturday, when Anisha's mother was not at home. In her statement to the police, she stated that she tried to commit suicide because of mental agony.
Md. Sabir Ali, 42, resident of Topsia 2nd Lane, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his flat at around 10.30 pm on Friday.
When roommates of the deceased arrived they found that the room was locked from inside and after breaking the door, they found Ali hanging.
Ali was rushed to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead. Preliminary enquiry revealed that the deceased was a patient of epilepsy and used to live with two others. He is married and has an eight-year-old daughter, but they live separately and their whereabouts are not known to any of his relatives.
Meanwhile, Asha Verma, female, 40, was admitted at Calcutta Pavlov Hospital on November 25, for treatment. On November 29, she was found hanging from an iron railing of a room on the 4th floor of the female ward of the hospital. Her body has been moved to the NRS morgue for post-mortem.
