Kolkata: The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police nabbed two persons with huge quantities of amphetamines, commonly known as 'Yaba', in tablet form.
According to police, on Saturday morning, STF officials were tipped-off that two persons would arrive in a sedan with narcotic substance to reach a destination in the city.
Acting on the information, a STF team was deployed to stop the car on Duffrin Road.
Around 1:20 pm, the police spotted a sedan without registration plate. The car was immediately intercepted. Following that police found two persons from Manipur were sitting inside the car. When police asked the duo to get down from the car, they allegedly started arguing with the officers. Later, the police forced them to deboard and frisked the car.
During the search, the police found a bag containing Amphetamine commonly known as 'Yaba' in tablet form. Following that the duo along with the car and the bag were taken to Lalbazar.
There police counted the tablets and found that they were carrying 50,000 Yaba tablets weighing about 5.6 kg. The seized Yaba is worth Rs 50 lakh approximately in the illegal market.
The two accused persons, identified as Md Abbas Khan alias and Md. Ziour Rahaman of Thoubal in Manipur, were arrested. Khan was driving the car when the police intercepted them. It is suspected that the seized 'Yaba' was procured from Indo-Myanmar border and brought it to Kolkata to smuggle out to Bangladesh. Sources informed that demand of 'Yaba' is high in Bangladesh as it is a low cost drug. Also, as consuming alcohol is illegal there, such drugs have gain popularity across Bangladesh.
A few months ago, the STF nabbed several drug peddlers and narcotic dealers with Yaba and other banned drugs worth more than Rs 12 crore.
