One person died in a road accident in New Town on Friday when a truck knocked down a cycle van on the Rabindra Tirtha connector. The cycle van puller came under the wheels of that truck and died on the spot.
Rashidul Molla, the victim, was paddling while crossing the road. But a speeding truck hit the vehicle sidewise. Molla, resident of New Town's Patharghata, was crushed under the wheels.

Local residents protested against rash driving in the area. They alleged that most of the vehicles here run in a breakneck speed.

"Many people including children cross this road. The vehicle drivers do not check their speed and drive without any care," said a local.

However, an employee of a private company alleged that the signaling system was not properly done here. The increasing number of road accidents in Bidhannagar area has
made the city police to come up with comprehensive plans of action. It may be mentioned that New Town, the sophisticated township, falls under
the jurisdiction of Bidhannagar City Police.

Police recently came to the conclusion to restrict the erring movement of vehicular traffic in a strong footing and the violation of norms could lead to heavy penalties.
The Bidhannagar City Police are also spreading the state government's campaign — Safe Drive, Save Life — to curb the number of road accidents.
