Kolkata: Mild tremors were felt in various South Bengal districts including Hooghly, Howrah, West Midnapore and East Midnapore.
The tremors were experienced around 4.05 pm. It was a very low-intensity tremor and did not last long. Many in the city had, however, no clue about the development.
It was learnt that an earthquake measuring around 3.6 on the Richter Scale hit some parts of South Bengal on Saturday afternoon.
Tremors were felt in Howrah as well. Some people from the districts came out of their houses and stood in the open for a while. According to Ranen Mondal, a resident of Howrah, the ceiling fan which was switched off had started shaking. The incident triggered panic among the locals. However, the vibrations lasted only for a few seconds.
According to the Meteorological department, the depth of the earthquake measured around 10 km deep.
The source of the quake is not yet known. The earthquake was also felt in Ghatal, Kharagpur of West Midnapore and many parts of East Midnapore district as well.
