Balurghat: An active Trinamool worker of Gangarampur was shot at by a goon on Sunday night.
The incident took place in Bikor village under Nandanpur gram panchayat when the Trinamool party man, Dilip Sarkar was attending a picnic with some others. Suddenly, he was shot at by the goon.
Seriously injured Sarkar was rushed to Gangarampur sub-divisional hospital where he succumbed.
A written complaint was lodged with police by the deceased's wife Rani Sarkar at Gangarampur police station on Monday against one Asit Sarkar who according to the FIR, fired at him.
After receiving complaint, police started investigation.
The accused, Asit Sarkar whose name was mentioned on the FIR, has been absconding.
Police sources informed that Asit is known to the deceased and the duo was present at the picnic.
Sarkar's brother Gobinda Sarkar said: "We want stringent action against the culprit. I was also attending the picnic. Suddenly, a quarrel broke out between them.
As a result, I asked my brother to leave the place but he didn't. Eventually, Asit fired at my brother."
Sarkar was an active party worker in rural politics. He was popular too.
Police have sent his body for postmortem to Balurghat hospital.
"We have received written complaint by Sarkar's wife. The accused remains fugitive while we have issued lookout notice against him. Soon he will be caught. An investigation is on," said a police officer.
