KOLKATA: Commuters were harassed as some locals at Sadaipur in Birbhum put up a roadblock on National Highway 6 on Thursday. They were protesting against theft in the area and demanded immediate arrest of the people involved in the incident as early as possible.
People from nearby villages found gold jewellery weighing around 50 bhoris and silver jewellery weighing around 10 kg were stolen from the area. Subsequently, they put up the roadblock. The roadblock on National Highway 6 led to inconvenience of commuters. There was a long queue of vehicles including trucks containing essential goods on the National Highway due to the roadblock. The protestors set tyres on fire on the road bringing movement of vehicles to a standstill.
Later, the locals staged a sit-in-demonstration turning the situation worse. Senior police officers intervened and spoke to the locals.
The police assured all necessary steps in this connection. The roadblock was withdrawn following assurances of the police. A probe has been initiated in connection with the incident of theft and the investigating officers are taking necessary measures to find out the people involved in the incident.
The police are also speaking to the locals to know if they had seen anyone was suspiciously moving around the place in the past few days.
