Kolkata: Jadavpur University V-C Suranjan Das on Saturday met Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi who is also Chancellor of the university and discussed various issues related to its functioning.
This comes at a time when there was a serious speculation going on that the V-C might resign from his post. Das, however, said the matter of his resignation was "highly confidential".
It has been learnt that Das, during the meeting, told the Governor that he has been seriously ill. The Governor, in turn, reportedly asked the V-C to follow his doctor's advice.
According to sources, the V-C told Tripathi that he was unable to perform his duties properly due to his ailment. He was, however, told by the Governor not to take any kind of pressure.
It may be mentioned that around 20 members of the Arts Faculty Students' Union (AFSU) observed hunger-strike since July 6, two days after the university announced that it would admit undergraduate students in English, Comparative Literature, Bengali, History, Political Science and Philosophy on the basis of board marks, reversing its earlier decision to hold entrance tests. AFSU chairperson Somashree Choudhury, after the meeting with the V-C, announced that the indefinite strike by the 20 students of the Arts faculty would continue till the time the authorities reconsider their decision.
The V-C had also been vocal about the fact that he had to go by the decision of the Executive Committee (EC).
V-C Suranjan Das and Pro V-C Pradip Ghosh had earlier said that they do not agree with the EC's decision and would submit their resignations to the Chancellor.
