Suvendu demands punishment for former CM Buddhadeb

Update: 2017-03-14 18:02 GMT
State Transport minister Suvendu Adhikari demanded punishment of former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and former CPI(M) MP Lakshman Seth for their involvement in Nandigram carnage and urged the state government to restart an inquiry into the incident.

The police had opened fire, killing 14 people and injuring 17 others in Nandigram, on March 14, 2007, a decade ago.

Adhikari placed floral wreath at the martyrs' column along with Chandrima Bhattacharya, state president of the women's wing of the party. She is contesting for the by-election from Contai South Assembly seat.

Adhikari, who is the MLA from Nandigram, said Bhattacharjee and Seth were responsible for the Nandigram incident and they "should get stringent punishment."

"The movement launched by the people to protest against the torture inflicted on the villagers by CPI(M) should not be mixed up with politics. It is above politics. It was Nandigram along with the incidents in Netai and Singur that had led to the downfall of the Left Front," he added.

Chandrima Bhattacharya said that people are aware of what had happened in Nandigram. They know how people, who resided in those areas, had been tortured and oppressed by the CPI(M).
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remembered the martyrs of Nandigram at a function held in Nazrul Mancha on Tuesday. The day is observed as Krishak Divas throughout the state. "To mark the occasion, we will honour the farmers with Krishak Ratna at Nazrul Mancha. We are remembering the martyrs of Nandigram on the 10th anniversary of the shameful event.  We are committed to protect our farmers," she tweeted. Nandigram Divas was observed throughout the state with due solemnity. As higher secondary examination starts from Wednesday, programmes were held indoor. Blood donation camps were also set up to mark the occasion in many places.
