Kolkata: A man was killed after an SUV, which he was allegedly driving, rammed into a gas tanker at Kanksa near Durgapur on National Highway NH -2 on Monday morning.
The car was being used by the Japan Consulate. According to sources, on Monday morning, the driver of the car, identified as Firozuddin, was going to Durgapur.
Around 6:30 am, when Firozuddin was passing through Birudiha, the car lost control and rammed into a gas tanker, which was also moving towards Durgapur.
Hearing the sound of collision, local residents ran to the spot and tried to rescue Firozuddin but they couldn't save him. Due to the impact of the collision, the front part of the SUV was damaged and the driver was stuck inside.
After a few minutes, the police personnel from Kanksa police station arrived at the spot and rescued him. He was rushed to Durgapur Sub Divisional Hospital where Firozuddin was declared brought dead. Local residents claimed that the SUV was moving at a high speed and the driver failed to control the car.
It is suspected that Firozuddin had fallen asleep and did not notice the tanker in front of him.
On Sunday morning, four persons, including three Bengal Women's Cricket Team selectors were seriously injured after the car in which they were travelling rammed into a parked truck on NH 2 near Palsit toll plaza in Burdwan.
The selectors, identified as Purnima Chowdhury, Shyama Sau and Chandana Mukherjee, were travelling to Suri in Birbhum to watch a cricket match. They were then supposed to attend a selection camp at Dubrajpur to select players. The four injured were admitted in a private hospital in Burdwan but later shifted to a private hospital in Kolkata.
