Kolkata: State Health department is preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for setting up a Centre of Excellence for Infectious Disease Management at Beliaghata ID Hospital which was recently announced by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

A senior official of the Beliaghata ID Hospital said that a study is being carried out to look into various aspects before starting the project. The DPR is underway. Beliaghata ID hospital will have a separate wing for the proposed center of excellence which will mainly focus on research and data management of various infectious diseases. Many new departments will be opened at the centre. The proposed center of excellence will open a new horizon in the research and treatment of infectious diseases. The proposed center will work on data management which will immensely help in conducting a thorough research on various infectious diseases. Beliaghata ID Hospital currently has five departments ~ medicine, pediatric medicine, microbiology, community medicine and radiology.

Apart from carrying out research, the center will also collect disease related information, coordinate with other health centers and hospitals and provide advice by the experienced doctors. This center of excellence will disseminate crucial information relating to various infectious diseases on the basis of its research and will help the doctors to understand the nature of the ailments and the modality of the treatment. Six new seats for DM in the field of infectious diseases for every year will be introduced.

According to experts, there has not been enough research in this field in the country as a result it often becomes difficult for the health professionals to find out the nature of the diseases. Even the Centre has failed to conduct enough research on the changes in the nature of various viruses found in the country.

The experts also lauded the Chief Minister for announcing such a project.
