Nadia police have busted a racket from Nabadwip which was involved in repackaging expired potato chips of various branded companies and selling them in the market after some processing.
Police have sealed the factory where all the process of the repackaging were being done. Police have arrested the owner of the factory, Dipak Saha who had allegedly been running the business at Nabadwip station's adjoining areas for the past six years.
After coming to know about the incident, a team of police raided the factory and found that expired potato chips of various branded companies were kept in the factory. Police came to know in the interrogation that the accused used to mix various chemicals and colours with the expired chips and then repackage these items and sell them in the markets.
The investigating officers along with the municipal chairman of Nabadwip visited the stock room of the factory where many chips packets were found that have already expired. The spurious food items used to be supplied in various parts of Nadia and other districts as well.
Police said that the accused used to fry the expired chips following certain steps and then some unhealthy chemicals used to be poured on the chips to increase its taste. The police said that people can fall ill if they consume these chemicals-mixed chips for long. Police also came to know that the chips were kept on the floor for a long time after mixing chemicals and colours. It has been learnt that the accused owner of the factory has admitted to his guilt. The accused used to spend considerable amount of money for repackaging to make the chips packets look attractive.
Police have sent the samples of these chips to a laboratory for examination. A
senior police officer in the district said that stern action will be taken against the accused. A detailed probe has been initiated in this regard.
