Spell of heavy rain leads to waterlogging in parts of city

Kolkata: The city received moderate to heavy rainfall on Wednesday afternoon resulting in waterlogging on a number of stretches.

The heavy rain lasted for nearly half an hour followed by a drizzle that continued for the next one hour. Thundershowers accompanied by lightning hit various South Bengal districts as well.

The rain was caused due to the formation of low pressure trough over Bay-of-Bengal and helped in bringing the temperature down in the city by a few notches.

Meanwhile, people faced inconvenience due to the sudden rain. Some districts such as North 24-Parganas, South 24-Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, Birbhum received moderate to heavy rainfall coupled with lightning on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Regional Meteorological Centre, strong winds were blowing in some parts of South Bengal.

The MeT office also predicted thunderstorm in some South Bengal districts on Thursday as strong moisture-laden southwesterly winds would blow in the area, resulting in a favourable environment for a storm. The city may also receive scattered rainfall in the next 48 hours as predicted by the weather office. The sky became overcast in the city in the afternoon.

Normal life was disrupted in the city due to the rain. Waterlogging took place near Science city and on some stretches of Central Avenue and other parts of North Kolkata.

The Drainage department officials of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) swung into action to discharge the accumulated water.

Traffic movement was slow in some parts of the city.

A senior official of Alipore Met office said a low pressure trough got created over southwesterly Bay-of-Bengal, bringing rainfall in South Bengal districts including the city.

The low pressure trough may intensify further in the next 48 hours bringing in more rainfall in South Bengal.

The low pressure trough is expected to lose strength from Friday evening. The sky may remain cloudy in the city on Thursday.

The weather office prediction says the districts which may receive heavy thunder showers in the next two days include North 24-Parganas, South 24-Parganas, Hooghly and Howrah. A strong wind measuring around 50-60 km per hour may sweep through different districts, weather officials said.
