A pick-up van crushed a policeman to death at Cooch Behar's Dinhata on Wednesday morning. Chandan Talukdar, the Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) died on the spot. Investigation revealed that Talukdar was posted at Simultala when this pick-up van approached the check-post on high speed and while trying to dodge the checking, he rammed into the ASI who came under its wheels.
The investigators learnt that the van, that was carrying calves, was told to stop at the check-post but the driver paid no heed and accelerated to flee the spot, crushing Talukdar in turn, who was standing close to the spot.
The other policemen and the civic volunteers rushed him to Dinhata Sub-Divisional Hospital where he was declared brought dead. "The driver of the pick-up van knew that his vehicle would be checked. He was ready to speed up. Talukdar was standing nearby. The van hit him there," said a police officer.
Cooch Behar police have started investigation after the incident.
