Following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's instruction, East Midnapore district administration has decided to install sirens (devices producing a loud prolonged signal to raise an alarm) at Digha, Mandarmani and Tajpur to alert visitors who often take a bath despite alerts issued by the administration.
The police administration often conducts campaigns by using microphones to alert visitors especially when the sea becomes turbulent. It has been often seen that the campaign carried out through microphones do not reach the visitors resulting in accidents.
During the administrative meeting at Digha on July 12, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had instructed the senior administrative officials of the district to take adequate measures to check accidents. Banerjee stressed on the security of the visitors and asked the district administration to address the security issues with utmost seriousness.
It has been learnt that the Digha-Sankarpur development board has already procured 10 sirens. The construction work for installing sirens has already begun in some places. Out of 10 sirens, around six will be set up at Mandarmani coastal police station area, around two each at Digha and Digha Mohana police station areas and the rest at Tajpur.
It may be mentioned that the influx of tourists has increased at Digha and Mandarmani after the state government had taken up a series of infrastructural reforms at Digha and Mandarmani. It has been learnt that during the administrative meeting, the senior administrative officials told the Chief
Minister that sometimes the visitors go to the sea despite campaigns carried out by the administration as a result of which, accidents take place in these two areas.
Banerjee instructed the district administration and police to find a way out so that visitors can be informed about the alert if there is any, prohibiting the tourists from going to the sea to take a bath.
Chief Minister also instructed that the district administration to provide prior information regarding inclement weather when the sea has a possibility to turn turbulent to all the visitors coming to Digha, Mandarmani and Tajpur. The district administration acted promptly and decided to install sirens at the sea beach adjoining areas so that visitors can up put on alert if there is any impending danger.
In addition to this, campaigns through microphones will also continue. It was learnt that the number of police personnel, nuliahs (who rescues the visitors from being swept away) and civic volunteers in the sea beaches will be increased.
