Soon, overhead cables to be thing of past in Sector V

Kolkata: The overhead cables hanging from streetlights which not only create visual pollution but also disrupt data services during storms and cyclones, will be a thing of the past at the state's IT hub in Nabadiganta at Sector V, Salt Lake.

These cables create instability for the street poles whose foundations are not designed to carry the additional load.

An extensive network of underground ducts has been laid under the pavements of Sector 5. A series of meetings have been held along with follow-up talks with telecom firms and agents and these dialogues have finally helped Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) to relocate the overhead cables into the underground ducts in phases.

Street 13 from Wipro via College More to Godrej Waterside/Ring Road as well as Street 17 from the IT&E Dept via Webel More to Street 2 leading to Swasthya Bhavan/NDITA office are now being made free of overhead cables.

More streets will be made overhead cable-free in phases. This will also make data services in Sector 5 more stable and less prone to interruptions, thus making the ecosystem more tech-friendly.

It may be recalled that NDITA has already taken several measures to provide best service to the IT professionals. A comprehensive traffic scheme has been prepared to ensure hassle-free movement.

Steps have been taken to provide quality food to them that are available at the roadside restaurants. Pocket parks have come up where IT professionals can come to release their stress, eat food and go back to work.

Waterlogging on some roads caused due to the destruction of the underground sewer lines for construction of East-West Metro will go once the construction gets completed.
