Kolkata: Police have arrested six persons in connection with the death of a youth whose charred body was found at Khanjatapur of Contai in East Midnapore on Saturday.
According to preliminary investigation, the district police suspect that the victim identified as Ranjit Mondal was choked to death and the body was later set on fire to destroy evidences.
Police said local residents on Saturday spotted the victim. He was immediately rushed to Contai sub-divisional hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
Police reached the spot and collected some samples from there. In the course of investigation the police arrested six persons,including the victim's girlfriend. The preliminary investigation reveals that the victim was throttled to death by the assailants and the body was later set on fire to destroy evidence. Police are investigating if any dispute relating to the love affair had led to the death of the victim.
Police came to know during the investigation the victim's girlfriend was probably in another relationship. An autopsy was conducted and the preliminary report hints that Mondal had been choked to death and later the body was set ablaze. According to the police, no smoke was spotted in his lungs during the postmortem which corroborated the view.
Police said that the victim who had been working at a jewellery shop in Delhi developed a relationship with a college student residing close to his native village. A few days ago Mondal came to his house from Delhi.
Some local residents told the police that family members of the girl opposed the relationship. They also alleged that girl's family members might have committed the crime with the help of some others. Police have started a detailed probe into the incident.
