Update: 2017-02-26 17:54 GMT
A fire broke out at a godown packed with wooden logs on Sunday afternoon triggering panic in the area. No one was injured in the incident.

Eight fire tenders were pressed into action to douse the flame. Tension ran high among the local residents due to the area being congested. Some local residents found smoke billowing out of the godown situated on the 21 Canal South Road and the area was soon covered with thick smoke. The local residents started rescue operation but there was fear among the people that the fire could easily spread to other adjacent building. The fire tenders also faced difficulties in entering the area.

The local people, however, alleged that the fire tenders reached the spot late and by that time, a major portion of the godown was gutted in the fire. After being informed by the local people at around 4 pm, police reached the spot and cordoned off the entire area. The fire fighters tried to restrict the fire from spreading to other buildings. They brought the situation under control after one and a half hour.

According to the preliminary investigation, the fire brigade officials suspect that a huge amount of inflammable goods were stored in the godown that had aggravated the incident.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are yet to be ascertained. The fire brigade department and police are investigating if the godown had adequate firefighting arrangements.

In another incident, a fire broke out at Chandrakona film city in which four cottages were gutted. After being informed two fire tenders were swung into action and they doused the flame within an hour.
