Scuffle at Murshidabad hospital after patient dies of alleged medical negligence

Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital turned into a battlefield on late Tuesday night following a clash that broke out between junior doctors and the family members of a patient who died in the hospital due to alleged medical negligence.

It has been alleged that the junior doctors led the attack on the family members of the victim. A patient died at the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital at around 11.30 pm on Tuesday night. The family members of the victim alleged that the patient died due to medical negligence. Some of relatives of the deceased staged a demonstration inside the hospital campus when the junior doctors engaged in a heated altercation with the family members of the victim. The incident triggered tension among patients.

The victim, Dulal Mondal, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday morning with some kidney problems. His condition deteriorated later and he died at around 11.30 pm. The family members alleged that he died due to negligence of a section of doctors. When they raised a voice, the junior doctors of the hospital allegedly attacked them.

The family members of the victim have alleged that they were taken to a room where the junior doctors beat them up badly. Many of the relatives received injuries. Camerapersons of news channels who went to the spot to cover the incident were severely beaten up too. They received injuries on their head and are undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit.

The family members of the victim have expressed their shock on how junior doctors who are supposed to be the saviors of lives attacked them. After being informed about the trouble, the police reached the spot but the junior doctors did not allow the police personnel to enter the hospital building where the incident took place. A relative of the deceased alleged that junior doctors continued to beat them up in front of the police personnel who were mute spectators.

The junior doctors, however, claimed that they were attacked by the family members of the victim after he died in the hospital. What junior doctors did was in the retaliation to the incident. They said that the victim's family members attacked a junior doctor in the male ward. The other junior doctors who were at the hostel rooms came to know about the incident and went to the spot. A huge contingent of police force was later rushed to the spot and the situation was brought under control. The medical college authorities have ordered a probe into the incident.
