Kolkata: The police arrested two youths in connection with the murder of Trinamool Congress MLA Satyajit Biswas. With the arrest of the duo, the total number of arrests in connection with the murder of Biswas has gone up to four. Both the arrested youths have been named in the FIR. However, the prime accused in the case Abhijit Pundar is yet to be traced.
Acting on a tip-off, the police raided two areas close to Hanskhali where Biswas was killed by unknown miscreants who had fired at him from a point blank range on last Saturday. Biswas had gone there to attend a function in connection with Saraswati Puja.
Following the murder of the MLA, both the arrested youths had absconded. They returned to their homes on Thursday evening, following which a large contingent of police went to their houses and arrested them. Following the murder, Trinamool Congress lodged an
FIR against six persons including Mukul Roy. Roy had moved a petition before the High Court.
In a subsequent order, the court has banned the entry of Roy in Nadia and he will have to cooperate with police in investigation. However, he cannot be arrested till March 7. The matter will come up for hearing again on March 5.
Following the incident, the officer in-charge of Hanskhali police station and the MLA's personal bodyguard have been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been started against them. The security of all MLAs has been beefed up as well.
All India Trinamool Youth Congress president Abhishek Banerjee, party secretary general Partha Chatterjee and party Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondol visited the house of the slain MLA and met his family members, assuring stern action against the killers. The gun which was used to kill Biswas has been sent for examination, the report of which is yet to come.
Biswas was a member of the Matua community and the community members have demanded exemplary punishment of the persons involved in his murder.
