The wife of victim Sanjay Roy, who died due to alleged medical negligence of Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, lodged a complaint with Phoolbagan police station against the private hospital.
Ruby Roy, Sanjay's wife, went to the police station on Sunday evening and lodged the complaint against the private hospital alleging medical negligence, forcefully taking Fixed Deposit Certificates to release patient and misbehaviour with the patient's family members.
The police initiated an FIR on the basis of the complaint that she submitted to the police in the form of a letter on Sunday evening.
The police initiated a case under three Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on charges of causing death by negligence (304A IPC), extortion (384 IPC) and acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention (34 IPC).
A police officer said that the quantum of punishment for causing death of any person by doing any negligent act shall be imprisonment that may extend to two years along with fine and for extortion, one may get imprisoned for a term that may extend to three years.
"We will initiate a probe in this connection on the basis of the complaint lodged with us," the officer said.
Sanjay, who was admitted to the Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals after an accident at Salap Crossing in Howrah on February 16, died a few hours after being taken to SSKM Hospital. He was taken to SSKM Hospital as the bill in the private hospital had mounted up to Rs 7.23 lakh in just seven days. His family members had initially failed to clear Rs 2.9 lakh of the amount. Thus, they were forced to deposit four Fixed Deposit certificates as security before taking Sanjay to SSKM Hospital.
The delay caused in releasing Sanjay had allegedly led to his death at 2.45 am on February 24. Though the private hospital authorities had refunded the money, it had helped in no way to erase the allegations raised by Sanjay's family members against them.
The incident had proved all the issues raised by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee against private healthcare units just two days ahead of the incident.
Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee went to the residence of Sanjay on Sunday morning. He spoke to his family members and assured all sort of support to them.
Sanjay's wife Ruby broke into tears when Banerjee came to their house. The other family members talked to the MP about the situation they are passing through after the death of Sanjay due to alleged medical negligence.
