Kolkata: In a critical surgery, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has given a fresh lease of life to a 68-year-old patient whose respiratory tract and food pipe were affected due to a huge tumor.

The patient has been recovering and put under ventilation for 48 hours. He is stated to be out of danger. The patient, Tapan Kumar Das was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday soon after he visited the outpatient department of the hospital. He was complaining of acute respiratory crisis.

According to doctors, the patient was in a very critical condition due to the tumour. If there was a further delay in the operation, the patient could have died. Soon after his admission in the hospital, a team comprising four doctors of the ENT department was constituted to perform the surgery.

According to Dr Kuntal Maity, one of the team members, the operation was critical as the tumor was in the advanced stage and it was situated inside the throat between respiratory tract and wind pipe. The team of doctors performed the surgery for over two hours and successfully removed the tumor from his body. The other doctors of the team were Dr IN Kundu, Dr S Ghosh and Dr MK Singh. According to the hospital sources, Das, a resident of Patipukur area came to RG Kar Medical College and hospital almost a year ago. The doctors of the ENT department had told the patient and his family members that an operation was needed. But the family members of the victim decided not to conduct the surgery and opted for alternative medicine.

According to his family members, the patient had undergone Homeopathy treatment for one year. There was no significant improvement in his health condition.

As he felt tremendous pain in his throat and acute respiratory distress, his wife took him to the hospital on last Wednesday where the doctors advised an immediate admission.

After a thorough examination, the doctors found that the tumor was affecting the wind tract and food pipe. The surgery was finally performed on Saturday. The tumor was sent for biopsy. Dipali Das, the patient's wife said all the doctors took prompt steps to remove the tumor without which the patient might have died.
