Chief Secretary Basudeb Banerjee on Tuesday told the officials of the state Public Works Department (PWD) that there is a need to expedite the ongoing restoration work of the Writers' Buildings.
Banerjee on Tuesday visited the Writers' Buildings along with the senior officials of the PWD. Home Secretary Malay De was accompanying the Chief Secretary during the visit to the Writers' Buildings.
Sources said after inspecting the ongoing work for restoration of the 236-year-old heritage building, Chief Secretary directed the officials of the PWD that the renovation work has to be carried out without affecting the heritage of the building. He also mentioned that it would be better if the pace of the ongoing work could be expedited a bit.
He has also directed the concerned officials to follow all precautionary measures while undertaking the restoration work so that no accident takes place at the site. He asked them to take necessary measures to avoid any untoward incident while the renovation is on. He has also taken the details of the existing number of offices in the Writers' Buildings at present and how many employees of the state government are still posted there. Banerjee will be submitting a report in this regard to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The report will comprise details of the present situation on the progress of the renovation work as well as the existing number of offices in the building. Till October 4, 2013, the Writers' Buildings housed CM's office along with other government departments.
