KOLKATA: The students of Presidency University, who have been staging protests demanding the handover of Hindu Hostel, will seek the intervention of state Education minister Partha Chatterjee. They have also decided to appeal to Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, who happens to be the Chancellor of the university, to look into the matter.

State Education minister Partha Chatterjee on Monday said it is not right to blame the state Public Works Department (PWD) for the delay in hostel handover. Presidency University Vice-Chancellor Anuradha Lohia had also mentioned the same in an earlier occasion.

Sayan Chakraborty, one of the agitating students said: "Three years have passed by but the university has failed to handover Hindu Hostel. We have lost faith in the authority. Hence, we will appeal to the state Education minister and our Chancellor to intervene in the matter."

The students have been protesting inside the administrative building on the varsity premises for more than two weeks.

They were provided with the lodging facilities at Tarulia in New Town after Hindu Hostel was shut for renovation in July 2015. They have now refused to stay there anymore.

Chatterjee said the university is also trying its best to handover the hostel to the students.

"However, I feel that the PWD has hardly any role in the delay. Any order regarding speeding up work has not reached the PWD in the last seven days. If the varsity feels that the department is delaying the work, they can handover the contract to any other agency," he added.
